The iPhone’s security flaws were laid bare at the Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas yesterday, and now the smartphone-clutching public has boiled itself into a frenzy. But how serious is this supposed iPhone virus, and what can be done to protect your iPhone from infection? Here is what we know, and why you probably shouldn’t worry.

  The Attack Comes Through SMS

The iPhone virus exploits a memory corruption bug in the way the iPhone handles SMS messages. If your phone is the target of a hacker, you will receive a text message with only a square in the message — that’s when you know someone is digging his heels into your sand. But according to Eric Everson, founder of security firm MyMobiSafe, it takes a total of 512 text messages to actually get under the hood. The other 511 may float in like ghosts, totally undetectable to the user, but if at least one of them is deleted, the hack is incomplete. Turning your iPhone off or sliding it into Airplane Mode are quick and simple ways to escape the bull’s-eye.

It Affects Most of Your Phone

Find yourself infected? Here’s what hackers can do: push your phone into Denial of Service (DOS) from which you cannot make or receive phone calls; flood you and your friends with spam text messages (further spreading the virus); reconfigure keys; and distort or deface text. Since you will have lost control of your phone, the possibility of losing credit card and other personal information is at risk as well. This does not mean you should remove all data from your iPhone; you wouldn’t do the same with your home computer, would you? The effects are obviously the scariest part of the iPhone virus, but because it hasn’t evolved to the point of mass distribution, these facts are just worst case scenario campfire stories.

It Requires No User Interaction

Other smartphone hacks use SMS as a way of leading users to malware-plagued Web pages on mobile browsers. This new virus does not have that requirement. It does not need to lure you to a site; the iPhone virus does all the heavy lifting for you. But if you’re diligent and know what’s coming after you, you should be able to avoid all pitfalls.

It’s Not Out Yet

This is the most important point to keep in mind. The flaw was discovered by cybersecurity researchers Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner — emphasis on researchers. They acknowledged the virus’s potential, but also that it has to be done manually and therefore is not yet a virus in the wild. Sophisticated hackers, of course, could turn this statement on its head in a matter of weeks, but Apple should be releasing a patch soon — despite the fact that it has known about this flaw for six weeks.

The iPhone is a miniature computer, so it should be expected to have tiny gashes in its armor that allow for viruses to infiltrate. This is not a reason to panic. Booting up your iPhone brings with it the same risks as turning on your MacBook. If you’re going to be gripped in fear about one, you have to be the same about the other. When you look at it that way, you realize how insignificant this news really is.

EZ Publish – (free for lower software – and up to $10,000 for highest priced software) A Free publishing system but purchasing it can be up to $10,000. No, that is NOT a typo. I am not sure which one is free, you will have to investigate and let me know. The price tag of the higher versions scared me off.

Who is Telligent Systems?

Certainly not a newcomer to CMSWire, the Texas-based software vendor is most known for its Community Server product. According to Telligent, Community Server is the leading social software solution for the .NET architecture. Available in three flavors: Enterprise, Professional and Express, Community Server is used by several large organizations — including, appropriately enough, Intel. Along with Community Server, Telligent also offers a competitive solution in the blogging space called Graffiti CMS. While calling it a true Web CMS is a stretch, it is certainly a viable alternative for .NET shops looking to incorporate a blogging engine.

Now, What’s Worth US$ 20 Million to Intel?

It’s no secret that online collaboration and social computing are blistering hot right now. If it turns out we are in a bubble, then it will almost certainly be remembered as being directly related to the social networking craze.

And yet, if you remember the year 2000, you can look out at the current landscape in 2008 and see that not every company launched during the dot-com boom went out of business. A couple of names leap to mind immediately: Amazon and Google. Perhaps you have heard of them?

All this is not to say that Telligent is the next Amazon or Google, but it does mean that, if companies continue to add social computing capabilities both internally and externally, and Telligent Systems continues to provide a competitive offering in the .NET market, Intel Capital should see a significant return on its investment.

Apple has scored a victory in front of the advertising watchdog, with a ruling that it is free to claim its iPhone applications store is superior to a rival service offered by Google.

The Advertising Standards Authority rejected complaints from fans of Google’s G1 smartphone that a TV ad for Apple’s App Store was misleading.

“Yep, there’s an app for just about anything,” a voiceover in the advert said. “Only on the iPhone.”

The ASA received 10 complaints that the ad was misleading because the Google G1, launched last year by T-Mobile and powered by the search engine giant’s Android mobile operating technology, offered a similar marketplace.

Apple said that it made the claim “only on the iPhone” because its App Store “provided users with a unique experience unmatched by any other application marketplace, including the Android Market”.

The company added that it provides more than 50,000 applications in 88 countries, while the G1 service offered 2,100 in nine countries. Apple also argued that the functionality of the iPhone was vastly superior.

“Because Apple had shown there were far more applications available for the iPhone than the G1 phone, and user experience of the iPhone and the App Store was distinct from its competitor, we concluded that the claim ‘only on the iPhone’ was justified and not misleading,” said the ASA in its ruling.

Apple’s victory will be all the sweeter after the technology company fell foul of the UK advertising watchdog twice in the past year.

In November the ASA banned a TV ad for Apple’s iPhone 3G for misleading consumers over its internet capabilities. And in August last year the ASA banned a TV campaign for making similar claims.

The Application Submission Feedback blog – actually a Tumblr blog, which is a light-touch form – simply lists the sort of things that can get you banned before you’re out of the gate.

Such as getting your “Lite” (free or cheap) version to upsell users to the fully-featured version: a Free/Lite version has to be feature-complete in itself, and can’t refer to features that the full one has. That is, you can’t have greyed-out elements in a menu suggesting you buy the grown-up version.

And “Avoid public figures and celebrities” (we usually do) – so something that morphed photos to make them look like the iconic Obama posters wasn’t allowed.

So far not mentioned is “don’t use functions that would really bug Apple and especially its network carriers” – though that seems to have been the reason behind the banning of Google Voice. More and more people are repeating the line that it was AT&T that put the kibosh on the Google Voice plan.

This, even though Google Voice is available on the BlackBerry on AT&T, as Om Malik pointed out: why would AT&T ban Google Voice on the iPhone but not the BlackBerry? He then checked with AT&T, which said “We can’t say anything and Apple is the only one who can talk about the App store.”

Mm. The murkiness of the App Store approval process – which is moving from simply murky and random to really quite disturbing – may be turning into the best piece of marketing that Google’s Android has ever had.

Update: there’s a rather scary – not for content but for implication – rough transcript of a phone call from Apple to the developer of Voicecentral which let you access Google Voice messages. Apple told it the app (which had been approved in April) was now being withdrawn because “it duplicates features of the iPhone”. To no avail did the developers point out that other apps do that too.

As they say, “there’s no app for that”. Hell, if Apple makes it hard enough maybe other handset makers really will have a choice – and even the US carrier Verizon, which aimed to preview an app store yesterday, might have a chance.

Oh, and another data point: a developer called Justin Williams says

With the latest app rejection being Google Voice, I am one step closer to selling off my iPhone products and focusing entirely on the Mac once more. I can’t help but feel that I’ve wasted the past 9 months of my life building on a platform that is so hostile and anti-developer.
